Fed: Cabinet agrees to let UN into Woomera
Federal cabinet has agreed to allow the United Nations High Commissioner for HumanRights send a representative to inspect the Woomera detention centre.
Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says Australia has nothing to hide over its handlingof asylum seekers and its detention centres.
UN Human Rights Commissioner MARY ROBINSON has sought access to Woomera following therecent hunger strike by inmates who were angry at the time it was taking to process theirrequests for refugee status.
Mr DOWNER says the delegate could visit Australia's detention centres as part of avisit by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which is due to visit between Mayand August.
