Big brother's back - brasher than before

It's bitchy, brash and, let's face it, downright bonkers. Yes, theoutrageous reality show Big Brother is back this week - with moreaudacious, although as yet unnamed, housemates set to strut theirstuff in the latest specially constructed house in Elstree, northLondon.

Back on the Big Brother bandwagon are Dermot O'Leary who presentsdaily magazine show Big Brother's Little Brother, and stalwart DavinaMcCall who'll be taking the hot seat for the launch, eviction showsand live finale. She'll also be hosting brand new Sunday nightprogramme Big Brother On The Couch, where she'll take a look back atthe week's key events, and chat to leading psychologists.

"When I first did Big Brother, I thought it was just another gig,but as time's gone by, it's become bigger and bigger," Davina smiles."What I like about it is that it's about the people in the house, notabout the people who host it. But I also think being in the house isno longer a stepping stone to fame. It's become less like that."

And far from being nervous at the prospect of hosting at least 12mad, noisy, live eviction shows, Davina is relishing the prospect.

"The nice thing about live TV, as a viewer, is the sense thatanything could happen," she says. "I find live TV more fun. And Idon't get nervous doing it any more."

Davina's favourite moments include gay Irishman Brian Dowlingwinning BB2, and Michelle Bass and Emma Greenwood coping with bedsitlife in BB5.

"Nadia winning was also a very emotional one for me," Davina says."Along with Pete Burns, George Galloway and Rula Lenska on CelebrityBig Brother. There have been so many amazing moments. Big Brother isan ongoing joy, and I'm very very lucky to be hosting it."

It looks like Big Brother has turned nasty. This year's house -which took 8,000 man hours to construct - will be a mixed-upsurrealist affair where nothing is as it seems.

While all the usual mod-cons will be available to housemates, theymay have trouble finding them - the bath is in the living room, thefridge/freezer is in the garden and who knows where the cooker is?

Tea and toast may be luxuries in the new BB house, with thetoaster and kettle placed inside a see-through box only to be openedwhen Big Brother sees fit.

And housemates may need sunglasses to contend with the livingarea's zany colour scheme - raspberry pink and baby blue are thedesigner colours of choice.

"The Big Brother House will have a bold style and some quirkysurprises that are exclusive to Big Brother 8," says the show'sexecutive producer Rebecca De Young. "We've got some big plans andideas for Big Brother 8 and want this year's Big Brother to feelfresh, funny and exciting."

Housemates and tasks

As usual the Big Brother producers are keeping the identities ofthe housemates under wraps until launch night. However, there are theusual internet rumours flying around, with some fans insisting thatthe housemates will be more 'normal' (surely not!)

Others say at least half of the rumoured 14 housemates will havehomosexual or bisexual tendencies and are said to include a Greek artstudent, an Asian teacher, a disabled woman and a mouthy chav. Andalong with the original housemates, a further six wannabes are alsorumoured to be battling it out for a place in the house.

"Every year we have the challenge of casting a group that aredifferent to previous Big Brother housemates and each year we meetpeople that can do just that," Rebecca says. "We look for individualswith a unique appeal who will be interesting within a group."

But what will the housemates have in store for them, once insidethe house? Well, some say the series will be built around a 'saintsand sinners' theme in an attempt to cause friction. Other reportsstate that instead of the usual pounds100,000 prize fund, Big Brother8 contestants will each have personal bank accounts and competeagainst each other to earn cash in a renamed Big Brother, Big Brother- The Battle, which will see housemates completing tasks for cashrather than food.

Big Brother: The Live Launch is on Channel 4 from May 30
